By Muni bus and train

The 5 and 5R Fulton run along the park’s north side to the ocean; get off at Eighth Avenue for the museums. The N Judah runs along the south side; get off at Ninth Avenue and Irving Street for the museums and Botanical Garden, or ride to Ocean Beach at the end of the line. The 7 Haight-Noriega stops at Lincoln Way and Ninth Avenue. The 44 O’Shaughnessy runs right through the Music Concourse. The 33 and 21 reach the Haight and Stanyan corner, and the 28 and 28R cross the park on Park Presidio and 19th Avenue.

From downtown and Union Square

From Union Square or the Financial District, the simplest options are the N Judah from the Montgomery, Powell or Civic Center stations (also served by BART) to Ninth and Irving, or the 5R Fulton from Market Street to Eighth Avenue. Either takes about 30 to 40 minutes. Pay with a Clipper card or the MuniMobile app.

Driving and rideshare

By car, the park is about 15 minutes from downtown and 25 to 35 minutes from SFO in light traffic. Park Presidio Drive and 19th Avenue (Highway 1) cross the park via Crossover Drive, and Transverse Drive and Chain of Lakes Drive also run north to south. For the museums, enter the Music Concourse Garage from Fulton Street at Tenth Avenue or from Martin Luther King Jr. Drive near Ninth Avenue. Rideshare drop-offs work well at the Music Concourse and the Haight-Stanyan entrance. See parking before you go, because paid parking on park roads is planned for 2027.

The free park shuttle

San Francisco Recreation and Park runs a free shuttle, seven days a week, on the eastern side of the park, mainly along JFK Promenade between Haight and Stanyan streets and Transverse Drive, with stops at the museums, gardens, Blue Heron Boathouse and the Conservatory. It runs every 15 minutes from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on weekends and holidays and every 25 minutes from noon to 6 p.m. on weekdays.
