Golden Gate Park has big meadows, sheltered dells and reservable picnic areas with barbecue pits. Here is where to spread out a blanket and how to reserve a site for a group.

The best meadows for a picnic

Robin Williams Meadow (formerly Sharon Meadow) and Hippie Hill catch the afternoon sun near Haight Street. Hellman Hollow, once Speedway Meadow, is long and open in the middle of the park. Lindley Meadow and Marx Meadow are quieter and ringed by trees, and the lawns around the Rose Garden and Blue Heron Lake suit smaller groups.

Reserve a picnic area or barbecue

Most lawns are first come, first served. For larger groups, San Francisco Recreation and Park takes reservations for picnic areas with tables and barbecue pits, including sites in Lindley Meadow, Marx Meadow and other meadows; reserve weeks ahead for summer weekends. Big events in the meadows, such as Outside Lands, close large areas for days.

What to bring

Bring layers and a blanket with a waterproof backing: the grass is often damp from fog. Grab supplies at the markets on Haight Street, Irving Street or Clement Street (see where to eat). Only use barbecues in designated pits.

Leave the meadow as you found it

Pack out your trash or use the bins, keep dogs leashed outside designated off-leash areas, and keep amplified music low. Raccoons, crows and ravens are quick to raid unattended food.
