Start at the playground and carousel
The Koret Children’s Quarter, near the east end, has big hillside slides, climbing nets and toddler areas, and the 1914 carousel next door costs a dollar or two a ride for kids. Restrooms are next to the playground. It is busiest on weekend mornings.
Animals, fish and boats
At the California Academy of Sciences, children love the penguins, the coral reef and the rainforest dome. Rent a pedal boat at Blue Heron Lake, watch radio-controlled boats and turtles on Spreckels Lake, and visit the bison in the west end. The Japanese Tea Garden drum bridge is a favorite climb.
Rainy or foggy-day plans
On cold, foggy or wet days, head indoors to the Academy, the Conservatory of Flowers or the de Young, whose observation tower is free. The Academy is the best all-weather choice for younger children; the Conservatory is warm and quick.
Strollers, restrooms and snacks
The JFK Promenade is car-free and stroller-friendly, and the free park shuttle has room for strollers. Restrooms and snacks are at the Music Concourse, Blue Heron Boathouse and Beach Chalet. Children under 5 ride the carousel free with an adult, and most garden attractions are free for younger children.
