Choose your neighborhood first
Choose by the kind of trip you want. Haight-Ashbury puts you at the park’s east entrance with cafés and vintage shops. The Inner Richmond and Inner Sunset are residential, with great food streets and mostly small inns and short-term rentals. The Outer Richmond near Lands End is quiet and close to the ocean. The Presidio and Japantown are a short drive or bus ride away, and downtown has the most choice but a 30- to 40-minute ride.
Hotels closest to the park
The Stanyan Park Hotel is a restored Victorian at 750 Stanyan Street, directly across from the park’s east end and on the National Register of Historic Places. The Seal Rock Inn, a 1959 motor inn at 545 Point Lobos Avenue near Lands End, has ocean views, free parking and fireplaces in some rooms. In the Presidio, the Inn at the Presidio occupies a 1903 officers’ building. See the table below for more.
Staying downtown and riding in
Staying downtown or near Union Square gives you the widest range of hotels. From Market Street, the 5 and 5R Fulton buses run straight to the north side of the park, and the N Judah light-rail line reaches Ninth Avenue and Irving Street, near the museums, in about 30 to 40 minutes. See getting here.
Before you book
Confirm the exact location on a map: “near Golden Gate Park” can mean a long walk. Check parking costs if you are driving, because few hotels near the park have their own garages. Book early for Outside Lands in August and Hardly Strictly Bluegrass in October, when nearby rooms fill quickly.
