Strawberry Hill is the forested island in the middle of Blue Heron Lake. Paths climb past Huntington Falls to the top, which at about 412 feet is the highest point in Golden Gate Park.

Climb to the island’s summit

Two bridges lead from the Blue Heron Lake loop onto the island. A dirt and gravel path spirals up through cypress, pine and eucalyptus to the summit, where the foundations of the Sweeney Observatory, destroyed in the 1906 earthquake, mark the top. Trees block much of the view now, but gaps open toward the Richmond District and, on clear days, the Golden Gate Bridge. The climb takes about 15 minutes.

Huntington Falls

Huntington Falls, built in the 1890s, cascades about 110 feet down the east side of the hill into Blue Heron Lake. Paths and steps run alongside it, and a small bridge crosses at the base. The falls run on pumped water, so they are reliably flowing even in the dry season, though they are occasionally switched off for maintenance.

The Chinese Pavilion and stone bridge

On the north shore below the hill, the Chinese Pavilion, a gift from Taipei in 1981, sits at the water’s edge and is a favorite photo stop. The stone Rustic Bridge from 1893 connects the island to the south shore. Both are free to visit at any time the park is open.

How to get there

Strawberry Hill is a 10-minute walk west of the Music Concourse on Blue Heron Lake Drive. Paths on the hill are uneven and can be muddy after rain, and they are not suitable for strollers or wheelchairs; the flat Blue Heron Lake loop is. Combine it with a pedal boat or with the Japanese Tea Garden.
